What is Flywheel?
Every website is a combination of the following pieces:
- Domain Name
- CMS (content management system)
- SSL security
Hosting is literally where your website files exists, on a computer somewhere. Hosts usually lease space from a network of computer all over the world, which is how your website is able to be used by people anywhere. Your website needs to be hosted in order to exist, and we use Flywheel because they provide managed hosting, which means they provide security, support, and a lot of other things.
Your domain is your address, and once you register it no one else can have it unless it expires. Your registrar is (we use Hover.com) is where you manage your addresses and set up records to point your address to the server where your website is hosted.
The most advanced and flexible content management system that exists is WordPress. This software powers something like 25% of the internet, and can be installed on your own self-hosted website. It's one of the few CMS platforms that you can use on a website you own – which is why WordPress is the choice for both small businesses and larger international organizations.
SSL Security is the padlock icon you see in the address of your website, and much more. This is important on many levels and we don't need to get into all the technical details, but any website service that doesn't provide this is hurting your website.
